Furious that her efforts to tempt and taunt Rilla aren’t working, the Troll Queen uses her magic to breach Rilla’s mind in a battle of psychological warfare. She plays on Rilla’s insecurities and brings her most intimate fears before her. Rilla at first cowers from her own dark shadows, then turns to fight them, but the more she attacks them, the weaker she becomes. Finally, she realizes what the Goddesses and Winds have taught her. She turns to her fears with compassion and embraces them, accepting them as a part of her that belongs. Their power over her broken, she then turns towards the Troll Queen and embraces her, too. The Troll Queen—whose power can only be derived from disconnection and fear—cannot handle the overwhelming human traits of connection and compassion. She screams in pain as not only her powers, but her very life, flies out of her.
