Rilla, becoming afraid of the growing trust between herself and the Polar Bear, decides he must be hiding something. She sneaks through the Bear’s castle one night in order to learn his secret. When she opens the door to his bedchamber, instead of finding the Bear, she sees a man sleeping in his bed. Amazed, Rilla reaches out to him, not hearing the Goddesses’ subtle warning. He awakes, and in agony informs Rilla that he was under an enchantment, but her act of mistrust has condemned him to a forced marriage with the Troll Queen’s daughter. The Polar Bear’s palace starts to violently crumble around them. As the Bear—now in the form of a human prince—is whisked away by the dark magic of the Trolls’ spell, Rilla finds herself alone in the middle of a field where the castle once was.
